FAQ

  • How does it all work?

The idea is simple. We book group campsites that we open up to anyone to join by bicycle. If you haven’t tried bikepacking, don’t have a group to go with, or even if you are a pro, this is a great chance to network and learn from others. Think about it as a weekend of biking and camping with friends - ones that you just might not have met yet!

Events themselves have a nominal fee to cover the site costs (and often some extras like firewood or snacks).

Watch this video profile on the VIBC to get an idea of the vibes.

  • Where do rides depart from?

There are group departures from Victoria, and often Vancouver as well. When possible, we try to plan range of routes of varying intensity to accommodate beginner riders as well as more advanced riders wanting a bit more of a challenge. If departure dates or times don’t work for you, feel free to ride out at your own pace.

Routes themselves are released after registration, often at minimum a week before the event.

Departures after an event are generally a bit chaotic, so we don't organize a ride back. Groups tend to self organize depending on schedules and conversations had while camping.

  • What is each participant responsible for?

We ask that each participant be self sufficient for their riding and camping needs, and have all their own food and water. If you need to borrow any gear then please reach out! We have a very active and supportive community of riders on our Discord server.

Please ensure you have an appropriate bike repair kit and download the ride route to your phone or GPS. While we have an amazing community and many folks on the rides are able to help out, these are not guided tours and ultimately you are responsible for yourself and your own safety.

  • Do I need a paid membership to join a ride?

Nope! Events are open to everyone and a membership is not required. That being said, consider becoming an Annual Member for $20 to help cover overhead costs of running the society. Annual members get to vote in our AGM and get discounts with cool companies.

  • Can anyone join?

YES! Anyone is welcome to join and we try to make the events as accessible as possible. We have had lots of infants/children join as well as their grandparents. Don’t be surprised if you see a dog or cat being pulled in a trailer!

  • What's included in the fees?

Fees are charged on a per per person basis (not per tent etc.). The fees include camping, firewood, and often a treat. You'll be responsible for your own ferry costs, and plan to bring your own food and drink.

  • What's the cancellation policy?

Generally speaking we don't provide a fee refund if you don't show up. Event registration often reaches capacity quickly after opening, so we want participants that do register to be committed (or else leave the spot available for another participant). That said, we've provided individual refunds on a case by case basis in the past if requested, and provided enough notice was available to fill the spot from the waitlist (ex. Someone broke their collarbone 3 weeks before a trip and was refunded).

  • How do I purchase a ticket or join an event's waitlist?

Tickets are available of a first come first serve basis and have been known to sell out within 10 minutes.

We use eventbrite as our ticketing system. You can follow us there and get updates/reminders on events. We limit the purchase of tickets 2 per event to be fair. Once events are full a waiting list is established. Often some people end up not able to make the event, so we are able to offer spots to those on the waitlist.

  • What happens once we get to the campsite?

Once we get to the campsite, folks usually hang out and talk with each other about bikes, and if fires are permitted there is a nice evening campfire. There are not ususally activities planned except for a prize draw that happens in the evening.

For multi-day events, we often plan a fun day ride on the second day.

We always aim to post these ride details prior to the event, so people can do their own research. The best way to find out about these details is to join our Discord server.
